IT'S HERE - DAY #30!

DAY 30
of
30 PAINTINGS IN 30 DAYS

A WALK BEFORE DINNER
11 x 14 oil on canvas board

For purchase information, click here.

I painted one from a photo taken while we were on Sandbridge a little over a week ago.  So many people roaming the beach - families, couples - even a young couple pushing a stroller on the packed sand right near the water.  Such great memories of a beautiful place.

PRINCE OF ORANGE - 16 x 20 inch oil on stretched canvas

DAY 29
OF
30 PAINTINGS IN 30 DAYS

PRINCE OF ORANGE
16 x 20
NFS

I did today's painting with a palette knife and oils - about 3 months ago.  I was unsuccessful with three different attempts at painting a true "Day 29" painting - so I had to resort to pulling out one of my previous paintings.  This one hangs in my home, so it won't be listed at Daily Paintworks.

This poppy, "Prince of Orange", has huge, glossy, tangerine petals and will last for years in the garden.

Tomorrow is DAY 30 of the challenge.  The end.
I'm trying to decide what to paint for the last day.  I have two different ideas and both involve the palette knife.  That seems appropriate since the idea for this challenge comes from Leslie Byrd Saeta, the palette knife artist whose workshop I attended this month.  I learned so much at Leslie's workshop - one thing I learned is that I really do enjoy using the palette knife for painting.  It's a challenging way to paint, yet has quite a bit of forgiveness.  And there's something about the freedom it gives you - those beautiful, juicy colors take on a new depth when they come off the knife in different thicknesses.  A painting can almost look like it moves because of all the texture.

Done for tonight.

RUBY'S YELLOW BARN #2

Day 28
of
30 Paintings in 30 Days

I painted Ruby's old yellow barn on Day #15 of Leslie Saeta's 30 in 30 Challenge and it's now on it's way to Massachusetts.  I loved that little painting because it represents where we live.  Everyone knows where to find Ruby's farm with the yellow barn - it's a real landmark around here.  So, I painted another one tonight, this time a little larger.

BLUE ON BLUE - 11x14 inch oil on canvas board

Day 27
of
30 Paintings In 30 Days

Something a little bigger and different today - an 11x14 palette knife painting on canvas board.  I toned the canvas with an orange-red paint for a little interest on the edges. This is loosely based on a vase of flowers I had last spring.

Also, working on my 30 in 30 "flip book" now - only a few days to go and I can wrap it up!

WHEN LIFE GIVES YOU LEMONS

DAY 26
of
30 PAINTINGS IN 30 DAYS

"WHEN LIFE GIVES YOU LEMONS"
8 x 8 inch oil on canvas panel

For purchase information click here.

It's a beautiful, fall day in Wisconsin and I wanted to paint something that was a reflection of that.  What could be better than three bright, sunny lemons?  Their crisp yellow color and muted background remind me of our landscape right now.  The leaves are just barely beginning to change to their yellows, oranges, and reds, and as they fall, the color of the whole landscape changes.  Done completely with a palette knife, this was a fun and challenging one to paint!

FOUR MORE DAYS!

SUMMER LUNCH - 6 x 6 inch oil

DAY 25
of
30 PAINTINGS IN 30 DAYS

We arrived at home yesterday after putting nearly 3,000 miles on the car (Brookfield, Wisconsin, to Sandbridge, Virginia, to Asheville, North Carolina, and back to Wisconsin again).  I got all set up and started painting, but nothing seemed to work. Maybe I've gotten too used to painting in hotels.  I guess I need to get reacquainted with my old setup.

So, it's a recycling day for the 30 in 30.  I painted this little 6 x 6 for a friend a few months ago using both palette knife and brush.  It will work just fine for today!

MADDIE - 4 x 4 inch watercolor

Day 24
of
30 PAINTINGS IN 30 DAYS CHALLENGE

This is the last "hotel painting" of our trip home from Sandbridge Beach.  It has been an added challenge each day to keep up with daily painting while traveling.  Only 6 days to go!

 "MADDIE"

Painted from a photo I took near Monches Farm, Colgate, WI.

FISHIN' BUDDIES - 5 x 7 inch watercolor

Day 20
of
30 Paintings in 30 Days

FISHIN' BUDDIES
5 x 7 watercolor

I'm thinking about being a grandparent a LOT these days!  My brand new little grandson is 6 weeks old now and it feels like I haven't seen him for WAY longer than he's even been in this world!  So this little painting represents all the fun experiences I hope to have with this little guy.  He means the world to me and I can't wait to build a relationship with him over the years!

RIPE AND READY

Day 18
of
30 Paintings in 30 Days

Today was the first day of Leslie Saeta's three day palette knife painting workshop here in Sandbridge, Virginia.  Our day focused on technique and color mixing.  This is such a fun and challenging way to paint and the thick and textural results are so interesting to look at.  Tomorrow will be fantastic - painting plein air on Sandbridge Beach all day!  Can't wait!

FLANDERS POPPIES - 5 1/2 x 5 1/2 inch watercolor

Day 17
of
30 Paintings in 30 Days

This petite painting, Flanders Poppies, is named after the meadows of Flanders, Belgium.  During the Great War the poppies in Flanders' meadows stopped blooming due to the constant tramping by troops and warfare.   However, when the war ended, the poppy seeds were still there and sprouted, grew, and bloomed in the fields once again.  There is even a poem written to tell this story called, "In Flanders Field", by John McCrae.

"Flanders Poppies" is a 5 1/2 x 5 1/2 inch watercolor that will arrive carefully packaged and shipped - ready for matting and framing.

RUBY'S YELLOW BARN - 5.5 x 5.5 watercolor

Day 16
of
30 Paintings in 30 Days

This fall, I've taken to going on little sketching day trips with a good friend of mine.  This is from a sketching day at the old homestead and yellow horse barn that belonged to Rolland Ruby.  It was built in 1860, but now Ruby is gone and there is talk that the old barn and homestead will be torn down.  Thought I'd better sketch/paint the barn while it was still around!

SANDBRIDGE BEACH UMBRELLA

Day 15
of
30 PAINTINGS IN 30 DAYS

AT THE BEACH
5 x 5 inch watercolor
For purchase information click here.

We made it!  We arrived in Sandbridge yesterday afternoon and it is glorious!  We have a perfect day on tap - hardly any wind, a high of 78 degrees, and just a few little puffy clouds at the horizon.  I can't wait to see what photos I'll be able to take.  I'm looking for lots of shots of people at the beach, mainly children, so I can build up a little library of "people photos" to use in future paintings.

Yesterday was a little blustery (as you can hear in the video) but today is calm and bright.

Now, it's off to the beach.  Two days all to ourselves before my workshop begins - which will be a whole different kind of fun!

CORN ROAST - 3 1/2 x 3 1/2 inch watercolor

DAY 14
of the
30 PAINTINGS IN 30 DAYS CHALLENGE

 "CORN ROAST"
  3 1/2 x 3 1/2 inch watercolor

Painting from the hotel again - this time in Williamsburg, Virginia as we prepare for the final leg of our journey to Sandbridge Beach.  This is done from a photo I took at the Cedarburg Corn Roast - an end of summer tradition In this small and charming Wisconsin town.  Known for its festivals and winery, the corn roast occurs right before the Annual Strawberry Festival - an event where artists, music, and strawberries abound and the streets are filled with color and people.

ICELANDIC BLUE POPPIES

DAY 13 OF THE

30 PAINTINGS IN 30 DAYS CHALLENGE

After a day on the road, were are all checked in for the night.  My oil paints and brushes are packed up tight for the workshop, but I got out my watercolors to see if I could still do something for the 30 in 30 challenge for tomorrow.  So here's a little watercolor of my favorite poppy.

"COMING HOME" 6x6 inch oil

30 paintings in 30 days

This one is posted on the road - on our way to the Blue Ridge Mountains and beyond for a palette knife painting workshop.

Inspiration photo was from a beautiful summer's day spent sitting in a "ditch" next to a farmer's pasture - talking to the cows!

SANIBEL STOOP - 12 x 12 INCHES OIL ON PANEL

Day 11
of
30 PAINTINGS IN 30 DAYS

The reference for this painting was a photo I took while staying on Sanibel Island, Florida.  Due to the vast array of shells on Sanibel, they have given this position a name - the "Sanibel Stoop".   While walking the beaches of Sanibel you can see scads of people all hunched over in their search for the perfect shell.

"REST AWHILE" - 6 x 6 INCH OIL ON PANEL

DAY 10
OF
30 PAINTINGS IN 30 DAYS

This is my second try for today.  I spent a long afternoon painting, only to scrape it all off and start again.  It just wasn't coming together - some days are like that.  But, tomorrow's another day and another painting.  And maybe a different subject!

LAZY DAY - 6 x 6 INCH OIL ON GESSOBORD PANEL

Day 9
of
30 Paintings in 30 Days

Today I went out to a nearby yacht club to sketch with a friend.  It may be September, but we've been having some very lazy, summer-like days in Wisconsin - perfect for sitting by the water and drawing.  So that was the inspiration for today's painting.  This was done entirely with palette knives in preparation for a palette knife workshop I'll be attending next week.  The workshop is being taught by Leslie Saeta, the brainstorm behind the 30 PAINTINGS IN 30 DAYS CHALLENGE.  I can't wait to learn more about her technique.

ORANGE DREAM - 8 x 10 INCH OIL ON CANVAS

Day 8
of
30 PAINTINGS IN 30 DAYS

I decided to stick with another chair for today's painting, inspired by one of the great chairs at Anthropologie.  Love that place - especially their furniture!  I entitled this one Orange Dream because it reminds me of the Dreamsicles I enjoyed as a child.  I was given 5¢ allowance every day as a little girl and that was just enough to get a Dreamsicle at Ray's, the tiny little grocery store on the corner.

Speaking of Anthropologie, I know I'm going to have to paint one of their big flowered chairs before I'm done with this challenge.  It would be too big a pattern commitment to have a real one in the house, but a nice big painting of one would be a fun way to have the feeling of one of these in the room and enjoy the pattern for a while.

WEARING BLUE VELVET - 5 x 5 INCH OIL ON GESSOBORD PANEL

DAY 7

More velvet today - a soft and feminine little slipper chair covered in blue velvet.  And tomorrow I'm moving away from chairs but staying in the furniture department.

PINK VELVET - 6 x 6 INCH OIL ON GESSOBORD

DAY 6
OF
30 PAINTINGS IN 30 DAYS

My painting for today is of a couch I just love.  While I don't own the couch, I do own the decorating book that it graces the cover of.  Such beautiful pink velvet - a very impractical but pretty piece of furniture!  I'd LOVE to curl up on this couch with a good book on the coming cold, winter days.

So maybe a furniture theme for a few days.  It's quite a departure from peaches and pears.  And many well-known artists used that theme, so I think that's a good possibility.

FRUIT ON DISPLAY - 20" x 30" ACRYLIC ON CANVAS

DAY 5
of
30 PAINTINGS IN 30 DAYS

Today was cleaning/gardening/organizing day at my house, so I haven't been near my paints.  However I still wanted to post a painting for every day of the Leslie Saeta's 30 in 30 Challenge, so I pulled out one of my very first paintings inspired by Cezanne.  These days I am painting in oils, but this one was done in acrylics.   Even blending is a challenge for me with acrylics and that shows in this painting.

Tomorrow a new theme.

EIGHT ON A PLATE - 8 x 8 INCH OIL ON MUSEUM QUALITY GESSOBORD

DAY 4
of
30 PAINTINGS IN 30 DAYS

I started too late in the day with this one.

It was finished in the wee hours.

Too tired to comment.

Tomorrow, flowers - Cezanne style.

Then on to a new theme.

26 paintings to go . . .

SUMMER FRUIT PLATE - 12 x 12 IN. OIL ON GESSOBORD

DAY 3
of
30 PAINTINGS IN 30 DAYS

Today, a bright painting of a fruit plate waiting on a chair, adding some blue to the already beautiful Cezanne palette I've been using.  He was known for sometimes distorting objects or showing things from several different perspectives all in the same painting - that shifting of perspective is going on in this one with the chair.  Also, some of his paintings have a messy sort of order which people can find unattractive, but I love it.

Details of the painting show structural strokes of the brush
and lots of thick paint to help create the texture and
shape of the fruit, bowl, and chair.

RIPE - 6 X 6 INCH OIL ON CANVAS

DAY 2
OF
30 PAINTINGS IN 30 DAYS

It's day two of Leslie Saeta's challenge and day two of looking to Cezanne and his chunky, kind of messy style of painting a still life.  I love the color combination of orange and gray.  The gray is the perfect compliment to light up the orange tones of the
peaches and bring out their velvety-ness.

POMEGRANATE, PEACH, AND PEAR - 8 x 10 OIL ON CANVAS

Day 1
of
30 Paintings in 30 Days

I am going to start out my first five days of the challenge doing paintings in the style of Paul Cezanne, one of my favorite artists.  I love his choice of colors and lush, bold strokes.  The curves of the fruits are shown as chunks of color variations, rather than a gradual blending.  It's going to be a busy month.

Making this commitment means painting every day and hopefully improving my painting skills.
